A project by Gather Create Grow CIC – Inspired by our love of the granny square & all things 70s
Did you know, records show the humble granny square was around as far back as 1885? We absolutely love a crochet granny square, they’re really versatile, great for beginners and perfect for using up odd bits of yarn.
But the thing we love about them most, is what they represent. Items made from granny squares are the yarn version of patchwork quilts, involving a collaborative effort in which multiple people can contribute a square or two. Each one is different, using unique materials, made by unique hands and tells their own unique tale.
For us, the magic lies in those squares coming together, being stitched communally whilst sharing smiles, stories, cake, tea and sometimes tears. Projects like these offer purposeful reasons to gather in homes and community spaces, creating something beautiful and meaningful together.
This display was created by members of Cosby Crafters community group for Cosby Yarn Bomb 2023, using newly crocheted & repurposed granny squares & old gifted blankets. Working on our Yarn Bombs nurtures togetherness, pride and a shared sense of belonging, we have a lot of fun too!
The flying ducks were made by macrame artist Sarah Louise Raymond and the TV screen was felted by Hannah Babaic.
Why don’t you switch off your television set and go out and do something less boring instead?
